How much time do I spend in Canberra? I travel to and live in Canberra whenever the House of Representatives is sitting. In 2009 the House of Representatives will be sitting for around 18 weeks. When I am not in Canberra I am at my office in Centre Road Bentleigh, meeting with people or business in the local area who need some help. Sometimes I travel to other parts of Australia to investigate things that I might be working on in Parliament.
What do I do when I am in Canberra? There are 150 members of the House of Representatives and 76 Senators. While in Canberra I debate with colleagues about legislation, make speeches and ask Ministers questions about what they are doing in their portfolio and vote on legislation. Also, while in Canberra I attend lots of meetings where we discuss solving problems or doing new things that can make people's lives better.
What do I do when I am in Goldstein? When I am in Goldstein I meet with people like you! I use this time to meet with people in the community and hear their ideas, views and problems, and then I try to do something about it.
Why did I want to go into Parliament? I believe everyone of us should use the particular talents we have been given to achieve things, to have a go. Whatever those talents might be, whether you are good a salesperson, a teacher, a tradesman, a lawyer, a singer, a chef, a driver or a business person - whatever particular things you are good at, you have a responsibility to make the most of those talents. True happiness and true freedom comes from using those talents to achieve things.
