Emissions Trading Scheme

Wayne Swan's hypocrisy

Portfolio Media Releases, The Economy, Emissions Trading Scheme

The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, has had a shot at the Coalition for initiating a Senate Select Committee inquiry into the best way to tackle climate change.

Yet, it is only three weeks ago that the Treasurer himself sent a panicked Terms of Reference to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics where he sought to ““examine the relative merits of cap-and-trade emissions trading as a policy mechanism against regulatory responses, carbon taxes, baseline and credit or hybrid schemes”.

His original request for an inquiry was sensible because the government’s version of an ETS is deeply flawed – it will cost jobs, kill investment and achieve little if any reduction in CO2 emissions.
