27-July-2009

Goldstein Media Releases, Community

Nominations for the 50th annual Australian of the Year Awards are now open. Bayside residents are encouraged to nominate locals whose contributions and achievements make us proud to be Australian.

“The Australian of the Year Awards programme is a great way to recognise and celebrate the contribution locals make to our community here in Bayside; contributions which so often go unnoticed.

“Local heroes not only inspire us with their achievements but also challenge us to make our contribution to create a better Bayside and Australia,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

Nominations are sought for Australians from all backgrounds and all fields of endeavour including the arts, media and entertainment, business, charity, education, environment, humanitarian, indigenous and ethnic services, medicine and science, technology and engineering or sport.

“I encourage all Bayside residents to take the opportunity to nominate someone who makes them proud.

“The National Australia Day Council relies on public nominations to find the recipients of the Awards and there are many people right here in Bayside who deserve nomination,” Mr Robb said.

There are four categories to nominate in:

• Australian of the Year – open to all Australians who deserve recognition for their extraordinary achievements, contributions to the community and nation and who are inspirational role models to all Australians;

• Senior Australian of the Year – recognises those Australians aged 60 years and over who continue to achieve and contribute to the community;

• Young Australian of the Year – those extraordinary young Australians aged 16 – 30 years who are contributing to the community;

• Australia’s Local Hero – recognises Australians who make a real difference in their local communities and who outstanding contributions enrich the lives of those around them.

Nominations can be made online at www.australianoftheyear.org.au, by picking up of nomination form from a Commonwealth Bank branch, or by calling 1300 655 193 for more information. Nominations close on Monday 31 August 2009.
