Bayside and Glen Eira residents and community organisations are being urged to take part in a new Parliamentary Inquiry into the impact of violence on young people. This Inquiry adds to the initiative already taken up by the Leader Community Newspapers’ highly successful campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of alcohol-fuelled violence.
The Inquiry will be conducted by the Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth and will seek to examine strategies in order to address the increasingly concerning problem of violence in the local community.
“I encourage all concerned Bayside and Glen Eira residents, especially young people, parents, and local community organisations to participate in the inquiry process and speak up about this vitally important issue.
“Violence is a growing concern in many communities across Australia and the Inquiry will help develop ways to address the problem,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth will inquire and report on the impact of violence on young Australians with particular reference to:
• Perception of violence and community safety among Australians.
• Links between illicit drug use, alcohol abuse and violence among young Australians.
• The relationship between bullying and violence and the wellbeing of young Australians.
• Social and economic factors that contribute to violence by young Australians.
• Strategies to reduce violence and its impact among young Australians.
“This is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of a serious problem which impacts on many Australian families.
“The Inquiry will enable young Australians to communicate their experiences and perceptions of violence to the Committee which will directly shape the ways in which government addresses this problem in our community,” Mr Robb said.
Local residents have until Friday 23 October to make a submission and hearings will then be conducted around the country. Further details are available on the Committee website www.aph.gov.au/fchy.
