Bayside and Glen Eira families have taken another hit from the Federal Labor Government following its $12.6 million cut in funding over four years for Occasional Child Care.

Occasional Child Care offers casual and emergency day care for children of families that cannot necessarily afford regular day care. The program was previously funded by both the federal and state governments, only now, the Federal Labor Government has bowed out.

“Occasional Child Care provides essential support for pregnant and newly delivered mothers, families dealing with crises, parents of autistic children or grandparents who look after their grandchildren.

“Thanks to the Federal Labor Government these families have now all been thrown into the lurch,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

Until June 2011 the Victorian State Government will pick up the cheque on behalf of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, but families and Occasional Child Care providers, known as community houses, continue to face serious uncertainty.

“There are several community houses in Goldstein, one of which I visited just the other day at BayCISS.

“Those at the community house told me that both users and providers of Community Child Care are concerned that without federal government support the service will no longer be available.

“This is yet another example of the effect the Federal Labor Government’s reckless mismanagement and spending is having on the cost of living for Goldstein families,” Mr Robb said.
