A Coalition Government would introduce a medal which would recognise the ultimate sacrifice of Defence personnel who are killed while serving our nation overseas.

“The new medal would help demonstrate Australia’s appreciation for those who fight for our country and do not return home.

“There is currently a gap in our military awards structure where the families of our fallen soldiers currently receive no special recognition for the loss of their loved one,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

The medal would be awarded by the Governor-General to the next of kin of all Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who are killed whilst on war service or operational service overseas, or who subsequently died of wounds received while on war service or operational service overseas.

It will be awarded to the next of kin of all ADF personnel who have died in such circumstances since 1948.

The United States, Canada and New Zealand have equivalent medals with Britain announcing their ‘Elizabeth Cross’ medal last year.

“The detail including an appropriate name for the medal, eligibility and any accompanying brooch or lapel pin would be developed in full consultation with the defence community,” Mr Robb said.
