Today Andrew Robb MP, Federal Member for Goldstein, hosted a presentation of the Australian Defence Medal for 8 Goldstein former servicemen and women.
Mayor of Bayside Council, Councillor Andrew McLorinan, and Major Gregg Jolly of the Australian Army were in attendance to assist with the presentation.
“Today’s presentation was a great opportunity for the local community to thank their fellow Goldstein residents who have served Australia in her defence forces” Mr Robb said.
“Today’s recipients, as well as the million other Australians eligible for this award, took a decision to defend our country – to defend their fellow Australians. It is vitally important to recognise and honour their service”
City of Bayside Deputy Mayor, Councillor James Long, was among the medal recipients. Councillor Long served for 13 years in the Melbourne University Regiment of the Army Reserve and is also a recipient of the Australian Bravery Medal.
“Australia’s defence forces have a long and proud history and it is fitting that we recognise and give thanks for the selfless service of our local Goldstein residents”
Over one million Australians are eligible for the Australian Defence Medal. Both volunteers and national servicemen are eligible.
“This medal ensures that all servicemen and women can be formally recognised, no matter their role. Whether their roles have been in direct combat or as peacekeepers, as part of the modern defence forces’ support services or the invisible roles, which national security dictates no public recognition of service, all have made a significant contribution and they deserve our thanks and praise”
The medal was established to recognise Australian Defence Force Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their service to the nation since the end of World War II.
