Preserving and maintaining Bayside’s heritage is vital to ensuring the unique history of the area is available for current and future generations.

Federal Member for Goldstein, Andrew Robb MP, is encouraging local community groups to apply for a Community Heritage Grant to assist them in preserving important collections of local work.

“The Community Heritage Grants were established to enable communities to preserve their local heritage” said Mr Robb.

“Community organisations such as historical societies, museums, public libraries, archives, indigenous and migrant community groups which have public collections are eligible to apply.”

$15,000 grants are available for projects which help preserve nationally significant collections and to provide collection management training that will improve the skills of staff and volunteers working with materials. Any Australian, not for profit, incorporated community organisation is eligible to apply.

“The Community Heritage Grants are a great way for the local community group to improve the local knowledge about the heritage of their area, collect information on a local organisation, or preserve the works of earlier generations,” said Mr Robb.

“Our heritage is a great asset. While some important works are housed in major museums and galleries, much is located in small communities. These grants could help to preserve that heritage for future Bayside generations,” Mr Robb said.

Local community groups who are interested in applying for the grant can contact Mr Robb’s electorate office on 9557 4644 or alternatively, further information can be found at www.nla.gov.au/chg. Applications for funding close on 30 June 2008.

“I encourage our local community to apply for these grants, to further enhance our knowledge of the past and preserve that knowledge for the future.”
