The Australian Electoral Commission will be conducting the national Enrol to Vote Week in secondary schools across Australia from 28 July to 3 August.
Federal Member for Goldstein, Andrew Robb MP, urged students in Goldstein to become active participants in the democratic process and enrol to vote.
“For over 100 years Australia has had a strong and proud history as a free and democratic nation. It is critical this remains so and I strongly encourage all Goldstein students to enrol to vote and have their say,” said Mr Robb.
This year students are being reminded that enrolling to vote is an ongoing right and responsibility. Between federal elections there are state and local government elections and young people who delay enrolling may miss out on having their say.
“Currently one in four 18 year olds are not enrolled to vote, and many 17 year olds are not aware that they can enrol now so they are able to vote as soon as they turn 18,” said Mr Robb.
More than 1750 secondary schools and colleges from around the country participated last year and the Australian Electoral Commission is hoping to register all the schools who held an Enrol to Vote Week last year, plus others.
“The Australian Electoral Commissioner, Mr Ian Campbell, has stated that local schools will soon be receiving invitations to participate in Enrol to Vote Week and I encourage them to register and get involved as soon as possible,” said Mr Robb.
