Federal Member for Goldstein, Andrew Robb MP, is proud to support the proclamation of ‘Battle for Australia Day’.

Battle for Australia Day will be celebrated on the first Wednesday of September each year.

“During the Battle for Australia our mainland was threatened and came under attack like no other time in our history,” Mr Robb said.

“Battles such as the Battle of Milne Bay, Battle of Isurava on the Kokoda Track and the work of the ‘Darwin Defenders’ were pivotal in Australia’s defence in fending off the enemy. Their service and sacrifice will be commemorated on this day,” Mr Robb said.

Local Goldstein resident and ‘Darwin Defender’ Melbourne Division President, Ken Davison, supports the initiative which will see the formal recognition of their service.

“I am very proud to see this day recognised on our calendar. It will ensure that future generations will remember the sacrifices made,” said Mr Davison.

Whilst not taking away from the importance of Anzac Day as Australia’s national day of commemoration this proclamation acknowledges the sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women who served between 1942 and 1943.

“The Coalition believes that the commemoration of the Battle of Australia Day in no way lessens the significance of ANZAC Day or Remembrance Day and gives the proclamation full bi-partisan support,” said Mr Robb.
