Goldstein Media Releases, Community
Running from October 5 to 12, the 2008 Seniors Festival is a wonderful way to celebrate Bayside’s senior citizens and their valued contribution to our community according to Andrew Robb MP, Federal Member for Goldstein.
In its 28th year, the Seniors Festival provides hundreds of free and low-cost events throughout Victoria including in Bayside for our nearly 30,000 senior residents.
“This week long festival is a great opportunity to say thank you to seniors and for all generations to join in the celebrations. Seniors are an integral part in building and maintaining a strong sense of community and this festival is a fitting way to recognise this,” Mr Robb said.
As part of the festival all Victorian Seniors Card holders will travel free on the metropolitan public transport network and regional bus services.
Bayside City Council will also be running events throughout the month of October including live music, guided walks and film screenings.
“Seniors Festival also brings into sharp focus the increasing cost of living pressures facing single aged pensioners who are in need of financial relief. In this vein, I continue to urge the Rudd Government to support the Coalition’s Urgent Relief for Single Aged Pensioners Bill which would provide an immediate additional payment of $30 a week for this valued group of Australians.
“I encourage not just our senior residents in Bayside but all of our community to participate in the Seniors Festival and take advantage of the many events which are planned over the coming week,” Mr Robb said.
