Backing Bayside's best sportswomen

Three young women in Bayside have been recently been awarded grants to assist them compete at the state, national, and even international level in their chosen sports, as a part of the Local Sporting Champions program.

Alison Dale of Sandringham is a member of Yachting Victoria’s Youth Sailing Team which competed at the Australian Laser Championship and Yachting Australia’s Youth Championship in Western Australian earlier this year. Alison is now hoping to be selected for the World Youth Laser Championship in Scotland 2010.

Aimee Benton of Beaumaris represented the Football Federation of Victoria at the National Futsal Championship in Canberra, also earlier this year.

“I love the competition, the teamwork, team spirit, travel and pressure of big competitions,” Aimee said.

Alyssa Broadhead of Brighton East competed at the 20 and under National Water Polo Championship in Sydney as a part of the Victorian Water Polo team, also earlier this year.

“I would like to congratulate Alison, Aimee, and Alyssa for their notable sporting achievements. For young men and women to compete at the state and national level, hard work and sacrifice is required from the competitors as well as their parents.

“Here in Bayside we have a strong sporting culture. The Local Sporting Champions program further encourages young men and women to participate in sport and strive towards the next level of competition,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

The Local Sporting Champions program continues to take applications. Individuals and teams are eligible to apply for grants of $500 and $3,000 respectively. Grants can contribute towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment to support participators in an official state or national sport competition.

Recipients must be between 12 and 18 years of age (inclusive) and travelling more than 250 km return trip to compete at these competitions. To apply or for more information please visit www.ausport.gov.au/champions
