Goldstein Media Releases, Community

From 11 to 17 May 2009, Bayside residents are encouraged to celebrate National Volunteer Week, in order to recognise and thank the thousands of volunteers whose hard work keeps hundreds of community groups operating for the benefit of others.

Beginning in 1989, National Volunteer Week recognises the extraordinary contributions made by everyday people across the country. More than 5 million everyday people contribute to the 710 million extraordinary hours worked annually by volunteers.

“In Bayside, nearly 35,000 people, from all walks of life, provide an invaluable volunteer service to our community in so many ways.

“Many residents contribute tirelessly and selflessly to health care, heritage and the arts, environment and conservation, emergency services, education, social justices, and sports,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to pay tribute to these many volunteers, who without, most community organisations would struggle to survive. Holding a morning tea, arranging an awards night, or simply writing a thank you card, are just some of the ways gratitude can be expressed towards Bayside’s volunteers.

The Federal Coalition has long recognised the importance of volunteers in Australia. Between 2001 and 2007, over $62 million was distributed to more than 29,000 organisations across the country. Earlier this year, seventeen Bayside community organisations shared in over $37,000 as a part of the Volunteer Grants Programme.

“I encourage Bayside residents not only to thank those who contribute their time as a volunteers but, for those who don’t already, consider volunteering themselves.

“No matter how big or small, every contribution is an extraordinary contribution… and anyone can volunteer,” Mr Robb said.
