White Ribbon Day: Be a Gentleman and Stand Up for Women

23-November-2009

Goldstein Media Releases, Law and Order, Community

Next Wednesday 25 November 2009 is White Ribbon Day – a day which provides the Bayside and Glen Eira communities an opportunity to commit to the elimination of violence against women. Everyone is encouraged to get involved.

One in three Australian women experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. Too often, people who are aware of such violence fail to speak up.

“As a community, we have a responsibility to address this sickening culture of violence. Every woman in Australia deserves to feel safe and to be treated as a human being,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

This year White Ribbon has launched the White Ribbon Challenge, giving all individuals, community groups and organisations the chance to be Champions and express their commitment to end violence against women.

Bayside and Glen Eira men can lead the way by speaking out when you hear someone make a demeaning or sexist comment in your workplace, at the pub or with your mates.

“There needs to be a fundamental societal change which categorically says that violence against women is not on. I encourage all men to take part in White Ribbon Day and assist in eliminating violence against women,” Mr Robb said.
