National Do Not Call register

05-April-2006

Goldstein Media Releases, Law and Order

Residents and small businesses in Bayside will be protected from nuisance telemarketing phone calls with the creation of a national Do Not Call Register.

Andrew Robb, the Federal Member for Goldstein, today said that “the number of unsolicited calls in Australia has grown significantly in recent years, and this has caused concern in the community about the inconvenience and intrusiveness of telemarketing.”

“It will be free for businesses or individuals wanting to register on the Do Not Call Register, and once a number is registered it will be prohibited for telemarketers to contact that number.”

“This legislation will apply to all telemarketers operating in Australia, as well as overseas telemarketers with a link to Australia. The enforcement options include warnings, fine and financial penalties against telemarketing companies.”

“This legislation will also put in place some national standards for the behaviour of telemarketers, including permitted calling hours and termination of calls.”

The Do Not Call Register is expected to commence operation in 2007.
