Bayside City Council has received $150,000 from the Federal Government to run an education program for Bayside schools aimed at reducing the incidence of new graffiti in the Bayside area.

The program, Graffiti Awareness Education Program for Bayside Schools, is targeted at year 5 students and year 8 students in local schools, and will involve performances to raise the awareness of the damage and associated costs to the community of graffiti vandalism.

“Graffiti has a high cost to the community, it is unsightly, personally unsettling to the owners of the affected property, and is also costly and time consuming to the community to clean up,” said Andrew Robb, the Federal Member for Goldstein.

“It is really important to reinforce to young people the impact that graffiti has on the community, so that they can in turn educate their peers and help to discourage graffiti attacks occurring.”

“I really appreciate the hard work that the Bayside City Council has done in putting together this program, and I look forward to seeing it in action.”

The $150,000 grant was awarded under the Community Safety Stream of the National Community Crime Prevention Program which is designed at funding grass roots projects to enhance community safety by preventing or reducing crime and anti social behaviour.
